Last Gasp of Summer 2016

RAIN and WIND! Uggh one is bad but both no thank you!

We have been hosting LAST GASP OF SUMMER for six years and each year Mother Nature teases us a little but gives us a beautiful day in the end. Not this year, it was windy and rained most of the day. True to our Northwest spirit our swimmers and volunteers showed up and had a wonderful day.

Some fun facts about THE LAST GASP OF SUMMER 2016

  • This was the 5th year for USA swimmers and the 6th year for USMS swimmers
  • We had 89 USMS swimmers registered for 116 splashes and 37 USA swimmers
  • This was our first year for the ELITE MILE and 23 swimmers swam the event
  • USA broke 2 records this year. USMS broke 15 records
    • Women 60 - 64 dominated the record breaking this year with 3!
    • Zena Courtney currently holds the 1 Mile Wetsuit, 2 Mile No-Wetsuit (2 age groups) and 2 Mile Wetsuit!
    • We added a new age group to the men 70 - 74. Doug Mason is the current record holder there!

  • This is the 3rd year for the blueSeventy Wetsuit drawing! This year's winner is Allie Boettger from Hoonah, AK. Congratulations Allie!

Last Gasp of Summer 2015

Did someone say it was sprinkling? I don't think the swimmers even knew! We had a few swimmers change from non-wetsuit to wetsuit because it was a little chilly in the morning. By race time the temperatures had risen, the skies had cleared and once again we had a beautiful day for THE LAST GASP OF SUMMER.

Some fun facts about THE LAST GASP OF SUMMER 2015

  • This was the 4th year for USA swimmers and 5th year for USMS swimmers.
  • USA had 23 swimmers registered and USMS had 90 - 106 entered the water
  • USA broke 3 records and USMS broke 14 records; 6 women and 8 men. You can see the full results on the results page
  • This was the 2nd year for the blueSeventy Reaction Wetsuit Drawing! This year's winner is Teresa F from Langley, WA. Congratulations Teresa!!

LAST GASP OF SUMMER 2014

A beautiful sunny day was in store for us today! Although we had a little wind and gray skies the weather was great, the enthusiasm was awesome and the race was a huge success!

The award ceremony was fun and there was lots of great food which equals lots of happy swimmers.

Some fun facts about The Last Gasp of Summer 2014

  • This was the 3rd year for USA Swimmers and they were raring to go! We had 28 swimmers, 15 swam the 1 mile and 13 swam the 2 mile.
  • USMS had 79 swimmers compete this year and the swimmers were strong!
  • USA swimmers broke 2 records in the 2 mile race: 1 male and 1 female see the full results on the results page
  • USMS swimmers broke 3 records in the 1 mile non-wetsuit, 1 record in the 1 mile wetsuit, 1 record in the 2 mile non-wetsuit and 2 records in the 2 mile wetsuit see the full results on the results page

LAST GASP OF SUMMER 2013

Rain, thunder, lightning was the forecast. Our set up crew, on Friday, got a little taste of what was in store for us Saturday morning - rain and lots of it. NO this was The Last Gasp of Summer, we might get a little bit of rain but it always clears up and is beautiful.

Saturday morning we had all looked at the hour by hour and thought we could sneak The Last Gasp of Summer in before the rain was suppose to hit. We arrived to Angle Lake at 7:30 to beautiful skies with no rain in sight. We set up the race and the swimmers began to arrive - still no rain in sight.

It turned out to be a beautiful day, great races, and a fun picnic after the event. Another successful Last Gasp of Summer!

Some fun facts for 2013!

  • This was the 2nd year for USA Swimmers and they were excited to swim. We had 23 USA Swimmers. 5 swimmers swam the 500 meters, 3 swam the 2 mile event, and 15 swam the 1 mile event.
  • We finally broke 100 USMS swimmers this year! We actually had 108 swimmers compete.
  • USA swimming broke 1 record and set 2 new records - See Results Page
  • USMS swimming broke 26 records and set 5 new records - See Results Page

LAST GASP OF SUMMER 2012

Despite the foggy morning with a little drizzle the music was playing, the swimmers were registering, and the lifeguards and officials were preparing their gear.

At 9:50 am the fog had lifted, the music was a little louder, and the excitement was building. Our 2 mile event started at 10:00 with a sliver of sunshine, our 1 mile started at 10:15, and our 500 meters started around 11:30 without a glitch.

With excited and HUNGRY swimmers we headed off to a great picnic lunch for all our swimmers and volunteers, handed out awards and celebrated another successful LAST GASP OF SUMMER!

  • USA Swimming had 25 swimmers - this was their first year swimming LGOS!
  • USMS had 98 swimmers - this was their second year swimming LGOS

First year of Last Gasp of Summer. This was tradionally our Men and Women of Steel annual picnic that Blue Wave Aquatics held to celebrate another successful year of swimming.
